The accused, identified as Chiran, arrived at the petrol pump visibly intoxicated, holding a cigarette lighter. According to police reports, one of the employees, named Arun, provocatively asked Chiran if he intended to light up the lighter, challenging him to do so if he “had the guts.” In a moment of recklessness, Chiran complied, igniting the lighter while Arun was dispensing fuel into a scooter, resulting in a sudden burst of flames.
CCTV footage captured the terrifying scene, showing a woman and a child narrowly escaping the blaze as others present at the petrol pump fled in panic. The fire raised immediate alarms, prompting a swift response from the authorities.
Both Chiran and Arun have been charged with mischief by fire and explosives. Police officials confirmed that the pair, originally from Bihar, will be presented in court. Inspector G. Rudvir Kumar of the Nacharam Police emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “This dangerous act not only put lives at risk but could have caused a catastrophic explosion, especially in this crowded area with heavy traffic.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with reckless behavior, particularly in settings involving flammable materials. The police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this alarming event.
