In light of the expected surge in passenger demand during the religious gathering, the DGCA has urged airlines to rationalise ticket prices to ensure that air travel remains affordable for pilgrims and travellers.
To meet the heightened demand, the DGCA has approved the addition of 81 extra flights in January alone. These new services will increase air connectivity to Prayagraj, bringing the total number of flights serving the city to 132 from across the country. With this expansion, airlines are expected to enhance capacity and provide more options for passengers traveling to the city for the grand event.
In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, the aviation regulator confirmed that airlines have been asked to further increase the number of flights if needed and ensure the fares are balanced and reasonable. This follows a meeting held on January 23 between DGCA officials and airline representatives to discuss strategies for managing the influx of air passengers during the Mahakumbh.
The price hike on airfares for flights to Prayagraj has been significant in recent weeks. An analysis by travel portal Ixigo revealed a rise in ticket prices by up to 21 percent on the Delhi-Prayagraj route, reflecting the growing demand for air travel. The DGCA’s intervention comes amid concerns from travellers who have expressed frustration over soaring ticket prices.
In addition to the rise in airfares, the approval of additional flights reflects the government’s commitment to facilitating smooth transportation during the Mahakumbh. With millions of devotees expected to attend the event, the demand for air travel is anticipated to remain high throughout the duration of the religious gathering.
As the countdown to the Mahakumbh continues, the DGCA’s actions aim to alleviate the burden on travellers by ensuring that airlines provide adequate services and maintain fare levels that are accessible for the general public.
