In a significant development, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a notice to e-commerce giant Amazon, accusing the company of engaging in “deceptive trade practices” concerning the sale of sweets under the name ‘Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad.’ The notice comes in response to a complaint filed by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which alleges that Amazon is misleading consumers by selling sweets under the guise of “prasad” from the yet-to-be-inaugurated Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The CCPA contends that such practices mislead consumers about the true characteristics of the products, thereby influencing their purchase decisions based on inaccurate representations. The authority expressed concern over enabling the sale of food products online that make false representations, noting that this can falsely influence consumers to make purchase decisions they might not have otherwise taken if the accurate attributes of the product had been disclosed.

The specific products flagged on Amazon’s platform include ‘Sri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad – Raghupati Ghee Ladoo, Ayodhya Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad, Khoya Khobi Ladoo, Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad – Desi Cow Milk Peda,’ among others.

Amazon has been given a seven-day window to respond to the notice issued by the CCPA. Failing a satisfactory response, the government has indicated that necessary actions will be initiated against the company under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

The complaint by CAIT underscores the sensitivity surrounding religious sentiments and the potential misuse of such sentiments for commercial gain. The notice to Amazon signals a broader effort by regulatory authorities to ensure transparency and prevent businesses from leveraging religious or cultural associations to market their products.

This development also raises questions about the responsibility of online platforms in verifying the authenticity and appropriateness of products being sold, especially those associated with religious practices. As the situation unfolds, industry observers will be keenly watching Amazon’s response and any subsequent actions taken by the authorities to address this alleged deceptive trade practice.
