Akasa Air, the brainchild of billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, has soared to the top of the charts in the airline industry’s on-time performance (OTP), surpassing long-standing contenders like Air India and Indigo.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation released its latest rankings, crowning Akasa Air as the frontrunner with an impressive 78.2% on-time performance in November 2023. Indigo secured the second spot, boasting a commendable 77.5% OTP. Vistara followed closely behind with a 72.8% OTP, while Air India and SpiceJet recorded 62.5% and 41.8% respectively.

The OTP evaluations were based on service punctuality for arrivals and departures across key airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Akasa Air’s consistent adherence to schedules positioned it as a leading player in ensuring timely flight operations.

The criteria for OTP considers a flight as ‘on-time’ when it arrives or departs within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. This metric reflects the airline’s ability to adhere to pre-specified timelines efficiently.

In addition to excelling in OTP, the Ministry’s report highlighted the industry’s performance in passenger grievances. The total number of complaints lodged for scheduled domestic flights in November 2023 amounted to 601. Vistara and Indigo received the lowest complaint rates, signaling high customer satisfaction.

Moreover, the report emphasized substantial growth in domestic air travel, with a 25% surge in passenger traffic from January to November 2023 compared to the previous year. This upsurge underscores the industry’s recovery from pandemic-induced setbacks.

Launched in 2022 as a low-cost carrier, Akasa Air entered the market as a direct competitor to established giants like Indigo and Air India. The airline, founded in partnership with former Jet Airways and Go First CEO Vinay Dube, quickly made strides in delivering efficient services, elevating its position in India’s competitive aviation landscape.

As Akasa Air continues to set high benchmarks in on-time performance and with an eye on customer satisfaction, it signifies a formidable contender reshaping India’s aviation sector under Jhunjhunwala’s guidance.
