“Air India Welcomes Inaugural Airbus A350-900 to Delhi”
Air India marked a historic moment as its inaugural wide-body Airbus A350-900 aircraft touched down at Delhi Airport, adorned with a fresh livery, signaling the carrier’s foray into a new era of aviation. The arrival of the A350, while a cause for celebration, initiates a series of post-arrival regulatory procedures. Customs clearance, various Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) checks on equipment, as well as a battery of ground tests and proving flights, are mandated before the aircraft receives certification for passenger operations.
Campbell Wilson, Air India’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, outlined the roadmap for integrating these state-of-the-art aircraft. “We plan to operate short sectors initially to acclimatize our pilots with the new aircraft, under the guidance of experienced instructors,” Wilson stated in a communication to the staff. This preparatory phase aims to build a competent pilot pool capable of supporting long-haul A350 operations anticipated later in the year.
Wilson also unveiled plans for new uniforms for the airline’s ground staff and Air India Express personnel. This announcement follows the recent introduction of updated attire for the cabin and cockpit crew, signaling a comprehensive revamp across the airline’s operational spectrum.
Under the new Tata ownership, Air India has embarked on ambitious expansion initiatives, with plans to integrate 40 Airbus A350 aircraft into its fleet in the coming years. Solidifying orders for 250 Airbus aircraft and 220 Boeing flights, the airline is poised for a substantial fleet augmentation, signaling its commitment to growth and modernization in the aviation sector.
The strategic move aligns with Air India’s turnaround strategy under Tata ownership, a vision underscored by the purchase agreements inked during the Paris Air Show earlier in the year. Crucially, the carrier has secured regulatory approval for the engineering line maintenance of A350 aircraft, a pivotal step ensuring the seamless operation and maintenance of the entire A350 fleet set to join its ranks.
