“Adani Plans $2 Billion International Convention Centre in Mumbai to Compete with Jio World”
The Adani Group is set to make a major move in Mumbai’s business infrastructure by constructing the city’s largest international convention centre (ICC), planned at a cost of $2 billion. The project, located near the Mumbai International Airport, will span a total of 1.5 million square feet and is expected to compete directly with Reliance’s Jio World Centre, currently the largest in the city, located in the Bandra Kurla Complex.
According to a report by Mint, which cited unnamed sources, the ICC is poised to host between 15,000 and 20,000 attendees. The centre will also feature a 275-room five-star hotel, offering visitors an added layer of luxury. The proposed location in the western suburb of Vile Parle, close to the airport, is expected to make the venue a prime hub for international events and conferences.
Approval for the project’s design has been secured from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and full approval is anticipated within the next two months. Once completed, the convention centre will be owned and managed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd., a subsidiary of the Adani Group.
The planned convention centre aims to foster connections between local manufacturers and global buyers, facilitating international trade and strengthening India’s position as a global business hub. As Girish Vanvari, founder of boutique consulting firm Transaction Square, pointed out, “Everybody wants to host events in India now.” This shift away from traditional global event locations in countries like Germany and Switzerland reflects the growing importance of India in the global trade and event space.
The project also highlights the strategic role convention centres play in establishing long-term goodwill for business families. Birla Matoshree in Mumbai, for example, has become a landmark venue for corporate meetings and shareholder gatherings. Similarly, the Adani Group’s new ICC is expected to become a vital part of India’s business landscape, offering an iconic space for major events.
However, the Adani Group’s ambitious project will go head-to-head with the existing Jio World Centre, which spans 1 million square feet and is currently the largest convention venue in Mumbai. The competition between these two major players in the industry signals a new era for Mumbai as a destination for global business and international events.
The project is also aligned with the national push to increase India’s global visibility and business interactions. As more and more international exhibitions and conferences move to India, the Adani Group’s new ICC is poised to play a significant role in connecting Indian industries with the global market.
India’s largest convention centre, Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, which spans 3.2 million square feet, currently holds the title of the biggest event space in the country. But with Adani’s new ICC set to open its doors in Mumbai, the city is about to enter a new phase of competition in the business and events sector.
