Adani Group has made a major leap toward greener transportation with the launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered truck for mining logistics in Chhattisgarh. The truck, developed by Adani Enterprises in collaboration with an Indian and international energy technology firm and a leading automobile manufacturer, is designed to carry 40 tonnes of cargo over a range of 200 kilometers, significantly reducing the environmental impact of transportation in the mining industry.

The hydrogen-powered truck was flagged off by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in Raipur on Saturday, marking a key milestone in the state’s efforts to promote sustainable practices in the mining sector. The vehicle will be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to the state’s power plant, further aligning the state’s mining operations with its commitment to sustainability.

Advancing Cleaner Transportation

As part of Adani Enterprises’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions, these hydrogen-powered trucks will gradually replace traditional diesel-powered vehicles used in the company’s logistics operations. The hydrogen fuel cell-powered trucks, equipped with three hydrogen tanks and smart technology, aim to provide an eco-friendly alternative to the diesel trucks that dominate the mining industry.

“This initiative is a significant step toward decarbonizing mining logistics and reducing emissions in the transportation sector,” said Vinay Prakash, CEO of Natural Resources and Director of Adani Enterprises. “We are committed to creating model mines that operate with minimal environmental impact while pioneering new sustainable practices.”

Chhattisgarh Leads in Sustainable Mining Practices

Chhattisgarh’s adoption of hydrogen-powered trucks reflects the state’s broader commitment to sustainable development. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasized the importance of such initiatives in reducing the state’s carbon footprint. “Chhattisgarh is at the forefront of meeting the country’s electricity demands and setting new industry standards with its focus on sustainability,” Sai said.

Adani’s hydrogen-powered trucks are expected to play a crucial role in this transformation, contributing not only to cleaner mining logistics but also helping to achieve the state’s long-term sustainability goals.

A Joint Effort Toward Decarbonization

This pioneering project is the result of a joint collaboration between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), both part of Adani Enterprises. ANR, which is responsible for sourcing the hydrogen cells, is also involved in other green energy initiatives such as wind turbines, solar modules, and battery manufacturing. The initiative also aligns with the group’s commitment to responsible mining practices, as it integrates advanced technologies like autonomous dozer push and solar power alongside the hydrogen-powered trucks.

By shifting away from diesel, the initiative aims to reduce emissions, noise pollution, and India’s reliance on imported oil, further contributing to the country’s efforts to meet its climate and sustainability targets.

Technological Advancements for Sustainability

In addition to the hydrogen-powered trucks, Adani Natural Resources is introducing other innovative technologies aimed at enhancing the safety and sustainability of mining operations. The company is the first in Asia to deploy Dozer Push Semi-Autonomous Technology, which is designed to improve safety while reducing environmental impact.

Adani Natural Resources, which is involved in coal, mineral, and metal production, has committed to creating environmentally responsible and sustainable mining solutions. The use of hydrogen-powered trucks in mining logistics is a significant part of this ongoing commitment.

Looking Ahead

As the mining industry continues to embrace cleaner energy sources, Adani Group’s hydrogen-powered trucks are setting a new standard for the future of mining logistics. This initiative is a testament to the group’s dedication to sustainable growth and its efforts to lead the charge in reducing the carbon footprint of India’s industrial sectors. With the successful deployment of hydrogen-powered trucks in Chhattisgarh, Adani Group is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future in mining and logistics.
