“RBI Questions People in Queue Exchanging ₹2,000 Notes Post-Deadline”
The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police investigates individuals standing in line to exchange ₹2,000 currency notes at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to determine if they are acting as agents for others. Media reports have highlighted the practice of engaging individuals to exchange notes on a wage basis.

In a recent development, the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police has launched an inquiry into individuals queuing up at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) counter to exchange ₹2,000 currency notes, amid concerns that they may be acting as agents for others. According to media reports, these individuals are compensated for their services.
The EOW team arrived at the RBI on Wednesday following reports that some people were involved in exchanging ₹2,000 currency notes on a wage basis. It was revealed that individuals exchanging ₹20,000 at the RBI counter receive ₹300 as remuneration, as per these reports.
An EOW official stated, “We came here after media reports said that some people were engaged to get ₹2,000 currency notes exchanged at the RBI counter. We verified the Aadhaar card details of the individuals in the queue and also inquired about their occupation.”
Additionally, officials observed that many individuals in the queue held exactly ten pieces of ₹2,000 currency notes, raising suspicions about the genuineness of their intentions and whether they were acting on behalf of others.
To further scrutinize the situation, EOW officials reviewed the CCTV footage of the RBI, which captures images of individuals in the queue.
Meanwhile, RBI Regional Director SP Mohanty commented, “No EOW official has met me. They might be inquiring about something in the queue. We will fully cooperate if any investigating agency comes to seek any clarification.”
When questioned about why individuals do not deposit their ₹2,000 notes in their bank accounts instead of queuing up at the counter, the RBI regional director clarified that both options are available to the public.
Officials revealed that on a daily basis, the RBI receives ₹2,000 notes worth ₹2 crore, of which approximately 95 percent are exchanged, while only 5 percent are deposited into bank accounts.
The investigation by the EOW aims to shed light on the involvement of individuals in exchanging currency notes and whether such practices adhere to legal regulations and guidelines.
