President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd’s (GRSE) facility in Kolkata culminated in the launch of ‘INS Vindhyagiri’, the latest addition to India’s naval fleet. The frigate, named after the mountain range in Karnataka, stands as a testament to the nation’s progress in maritime defense technology.
‘INS Vindhyagiri’ is part of the Project 17A Frigates, representing a line of guided missile frigates. These ships are characterized by their advanced stealth features, improved weapons and sensors, and comprehensive platform management systems. With a length of 149 meters, a displacement of around 6,670 tonnes, and a top speed of 28 knots, these frigates are poised to bolster the Indian Navy’s capabilities significantly.
The newly launched warship is set to undergo extensive trials and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The ship’s cutting-edge gadgets and systems are designed to enhance its efficiency and readiness for diverse naval operations. Once the rigorous testing phase is complete, ‘INS Vindhyagiri’ will be commissioned into active service with the Indian Navy.
The P17A ships, including ‘INS Vindhyagiri’, are designed to address threats across air, surface, and subsurface dimensions. Their advanced weaponry, sensors, and stealth capabilities enable them to neutralize a range of potential dangers. This multipurpose functionality ensures the nation’s maritime security is well-maintained and robust.
‘INS Vindhyagiri’ represents the last of the three ships being constructed by the Defence PSU GRSE for the Indian Navy. The project’s earlier five ships were launched between 2019 and 2022, underscoring the collaboration between the Indian Navy and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
