With the last date to file income tax returns (ITRs) for the financial year 2022-23 on July 31, taxpayers across the nation are rushing to meet the deadline. As the day approached, the Income Tax Department witnessed an overwhelming response, with over 6 crore returns already filed, including a record-breaking nearly 27 lakh returns on the final day.

The Income Tax Department took to Twitter to announce this new milestone, stating, “Kind Attention…A new milestone! More than 6 crore ITRs have been filed so far (30th July) of which about 26.76 lakh have been filed today till 6:30 pm! We have witnessed more than 1.30 crore successful logins on the e-filing portal today.”

The department reassured taxpayers that its helpdesk is available 24×7 to assist with ITR filing, tax payments, and related services. Taxpayers can seek support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media channels.

As the deadline looms, taxpayers with belated ITRs may still file their returns, but they should be aware of the penalties involved. Those filing their returns between August 1 and December 31 may incur a maximum penalty of ₹5,000. However, individuals with a total income of less than ₹5 lakh in a fiscal year will face a reduced penalty of ₹1,000 for the same period.

For those submitting ITRs after December 31, a higher penalty of ₹10,000 will be levied.

The Income Tax Department has been urging taxpayers to complete their formalities in a timely manner to avoid last-minute glitches. Filing ITRs on time ensures that all tax details are declared accurately within the deadline. Additionally, those who miss the deadline may face prosecution, especially if they have received repeated reminders from the Income Tax Department.

Furthermore, defaulters who fail to file their ITRs on time may lose the benefit of carrying forward any losses incurred in the current assessment year (AY).

While the deadline for ITR filing is yet to be extended, taxpayers are advised to act promptly and seek the assistance provided by the Income Tax Department’s support team. Filing ITRs within the stipulated time not only prevents penalties and legal consequences but also ensures that taxpayers fulfill their tax obligations responsibly and accurately.
