Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently visited the Hyperloop testing facility at IIT Madras, where he announced that the 410-meter-long Hyperloop tube being developed will soon become the longest in the world. Currently, this test facility is already the longest Hyperloop test tube in Asia.
Hyperloop technology, originally conceptualized by Elon Musk in 2013, is a revolutionary high-speed transportation system that utilizes vacuum-sealed tubes to propel pods at speeds exceeding 1,000 km/h. It is considered a futuristic mode of travel that aims to be faster, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable.
India’s Push for Indigenous Hyperloop Technology
During his visit, Vaishnaw also revealed that electronic components for the Hyperloop system will be developed at Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory. This move highlights India’s commitment to self-reliance in cutting-edge transportation technology.
Sharing a live demonstration of the facility on Instagram, Vaishnaw wrote, “Longest Hyperloop tube in Asia (410 m)… soon to be the world’s longest.”
The Ministry of Railways had allocated ₹8.34 crore to IIT Madras in May 2022 to support indigenous Hyperloop development and validation. Expressing optimism about India’s progress in this field, Vaishnaw praised the ongoing research and testing, stating that the entire system has been developed using domestic technology.
“This place is full of energy. I’m thrilled to see young, energetic engineers working on this new technology and conducting experiments. We are providing only small help, but this initiative will lead to great solutions for the country, our startups, and global technology advancements,” he said.
IIT Madras Leading Hyperloop Research
IIT Madras has been at the forefront of Hyperloop research for the past seven years. Its state-of-the-art facilities, including the 422-meter-long operational student-run Hyperloop test tube at Discovery Campus, have played a significant role in advancing the field. The institute also recently hosted Asia’s first Global Hyperloop Competition, supported by the Ministry of Railways.
TuTr Hyperloop, a deep-tech startup incubated at IIT Madras, is set to launch the world’s first commercial Hyperloop project in India next month. This milestone aligns with the country’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
