In a shocking statement, Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad announced a reward of ₹11 lakh for anyone who “chops off Rahul Gandhi’s tongue” in response to Gandhi’s recent comments on the reservation system in India. Gaikwad’s remarks, made during a press conference, came after Gandhi’s statements during his visit to the United States about potentially ending the reservation system, which he claimed would hinder India’s progress.
“While he was abroad, Rahul Gandhi said that he wants to finish off the reservation system in India. This has exposed the true face of the Congress,” Gaikwad declared. He further asserted that Gandhi’s comments were a betrayal of communities fighting for reservation benefits, including Marathas, Dhangars, and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
The provocative offer has sparked widespread condemnation. Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekar Bawankule quickly distanced the party from Gaikwad’s statements, stating, “I will not support or endorse Gaikwad’s comments. However, we cannot forget that historical figures like Jawaharlal Nehru had opposed reservations and made controversial remarks.”
Bawankule also pointed out past criticisms of reservations made by former Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, using it to justify the BJP’s stance. He emphasized that the BJP aims to sensitize communities about these historical comments, despite disavowing Gaikwad’s extreme offer.
Congress leaders have vehemently condemned Gaikwad’s remarks. Atul Londhe, Congress spokesperson, called for Gaikwad to be held accountable, suggesting that Maharashtra Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis should consider invoking charges of culpable homicide against the MLA. Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap echoed the condemnation, labeling Gaikwad’s comments as harmful to the political climate of the state.
Sanjay Gaikwad, who represents the Buldhana assembly seat in Vidarbha, is known for his controversial statements. Earlier this year, he faced criticism for a viral video showing a policeman cleaning his car, an incident Gaikwad later claimed was due to the policeman’s voluntary action after vomiting inside the vehicle. In February, he also made headlines by claiming to have hunted a tiger in 1987, wearing its tooth as a pendant.
