A Delhi man’s excitement quickly turned into frustration after winning a CRED jackpot worth ₹3.25 lakh, only to have the fintech company cancel his prize, citing a “bug” in their system. Aviral Sangal, who won a MacBook, iPad, AirPods Max, and a TUMI bag, shared his experience on social media, drawing widespread attention to the incident.
Sangal participated in CRED’s Friday jackpot without expecting much. To his surprise, he hit the jackpot and was thrilled to win high-value tech items. He promptly filled out the required forms and provided his PAN details for TDS payments, as requested by CRED. However, his joy was short-lived when he received a call from the company informing him that his win had been canceled due to a technical issue.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sangal expressed his disappointment, tagging Kunal Shah, CRED’s founder. “Even though I usually do not fall for the @CRED_club jackpots, yesterday I just played the Friday jackpot without having any hope of getting anything meaningful. But I scored the JACKPOT and it wasn’t a small one,” Sangal wrote.
CRED’s team reportedly told him that due to the “technical glitch,” his win could not be honored. As compensation, they offered to refund the coins used to enter the jackpot and provide a ₹1,000 cashback as a goodwill gesture. Sangal refused the offer, demanding that CRED publicly acknowledge the mistake and deliver the promised prizes to all affected winners.
In a follow-up post, Sangal revealed that the issue was much broader than initially disclosed. The CRED team informed him that 200 users had won the jackpot due to the system bug. Instead of pausing the jackpot, fixing the glitch, and honoring the wins, the company chose to cancel all prizes.
Sangal urged CRED to address the situation publicly and fulfill its promises to the winners. He also warned that he may explore legal options if the company does not resolve the matter fairly.
CRED, a Bengaluru-based company known for its rewards-based credit card payment platform, has not yet made an official statement regarding the controversy. Meanwhile, Sangal’s social media post has sparked a wider debate on the accountability of tech companies when technical issues affect users.
