In response to what he calls “the craziest talent war for AI,” Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has announced salary hikes for Tesla’s AI engineers. This move comes amidst aggressive poaching efforts by rival AI companies, particularly OpenAI led by Sam Altman.

The tension between Musk and Altman has escalated, with Musk alleging that OpenAI has been actively seeking to hire Tesla engineers by offering substantial compensation packages. The recent departure of Tesla engineer Ethan Knight to Musk’s new startup, xAI, has further fueled the rivalry.

According to The Fortune, Knight is the fourth engineer to leave Tesla for Musk’s ventures, raising concerns among Tesla investors. The focus on less traditional methods, such as moving staff between companies, has sparked worries about Tesla’s core car business slowdown and the limited oversight by Tesla’s board regarding such staff reassignments.

Some shareholders have raised ethical questions about Musk using Tesla resources for personal ventures, especially in light of his threats to develop AI outside Tesla if his pay package isn’t approved.
