“Sources Report MDH and Everest Spice Samples Cleared in Tests by Clear Food Authority”
Indian spice manufacturers MDH and Everest, embroiled in a controversy over alleged contamination, have been cleared by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This clearance comes after concerns were raised in Hong Kong and Singapore regarding the presence of the cancer-causing pesticide ethylene oxide in their products. A recent test conducted by the FSSAI found no trace of ethylene oxide in samples from the factories of these two companies.

The controversy surrounding MDH and Everest spices erupted when samples of their products were found to contain ethylene oxide by Hong Kong’s Center for Food Safety (CFS). This led to directives from the CFS advising consumers and traders against the purchase and sale of specific spice products, including MDH’s Madras Curry Powder, Everest Fish Curry Masala, MDH Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and MDH Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder. Subsequently, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) also issued a recall of imported Everest Fish Curry Masala.
Following these developments, the FSSAI launched a nationwide inspection drive on April 22, directing food commissioners to take samples of spices for testing. A total of 34 samples from Everest and MDH manufacturing units were tested, with 28 of them reporting no presence of ethylene oxide. Additionally, no ethylene oxide was detected in any of the 300 samples collected from other spice brands in the Indian market. Sources indicate that these spices have also met other quality parameters during testing.
The clearance of MDH and Everest spices by the FSSAI after rigorous testing signifies a positive turn for these Indian spice brands. It underscores the importance of regulatory oversight and quality control measures in the food industry. With the controversy resolved and the safety of their products affirmed, MDH and Everest can now focus on rebuilding consumer trust and maintaining high standards in their manufacturing processes.
