A new cyber fraud scheme has come to light as scammers impersonate Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, seeking money under false pretenses. The Supreme Court has taken action by filing a complaint after a fraudulent message allegedly from the Chief Justice went viral.

The scam was exposed through a screenshot shared on the microblogging platform X, where the impersonator claimed to be Chief Justice Chandrachud and requested ₹5,000 for a cab ride. The message, which contained numerous spelling and grammatical errors, alleged that the CJI was stranded at Connaught Place and needed urgent funds to attend a crucial meeting.

The Supreme Court’s administrative office has reported the incident to the authorities, and an investigation into the cyber fraud is underway. This case adds to the growing list of digital scams, where fraudsters use increasingly sophisticated methods to deceive individuals and steal money.

Recent data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) highlights the escalating problem of financial fraud, with a 166 percent increase in reported cases year-on-year for the financial year 2023-24. In response to this surge, the RBI has proposed establishing a ‘Digital Payments Intelligence Platform’ to employ advanced technologies aimed at mitigating payment fraud risks.

This latest scam underscores the urgent need for vigilance and advanced fraud detection mechanisms as cybercriminals continue to exploit digital platforms for fraudulent activities. The Supreme Court’s prompt action serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal and financial information in the face of growing cyber threats.
