PhonePe CEO Sameer Nigam has issued an apology following backlash over his comments regarding the Karnataka draft job reservation Bill. The controversy erupted after Nigam’s remarks, made in response to the bill, were perceived as dismissive towards Karnataka and its people.

Nigam clarified his position in a recent post on social media platform X, expressing regret for any offense caused by his earlier statements. “PhonePe was born in Bengaluru, and we are incredibly proud of our roots in this city,” Nigam wrote. He emphasized the company’s gratitude for the support provided by Karnataka’s government and its people, attributing the city’s success as a global technology hub to its inclusive environment and progressive policies.

The CEO’s apology was prompted by his earlier comments on the draft bill, which proposes reserving 50% of management and 75% of non-management jobs in industries, factories, and other establishments for local Kannadigas. Nigam had expressed personal frustration with the bill, questioning why his children, who have lived in various states due to his father’s career in the Indian Navy, would be disadvantaged in Karnataka.

His remarks sparked significant criticism on social media, with many accusing him of failing to appreciate local sentiments and urging him to respect Kannada culture and language. In his apology, Nigam reaffirmed his respect for Kannada and other Indian languages, stating, “I have the highest regard for Kannada and all other Indian languages. I truly believe that linguistic diversity and rich cultural heritage are national assets that all Indians should be proud of and respect.”
