A preliminary report by Justice John Michael D’Cunha has ignited controversy, revealing that significant funds from the state’s ₹13,000 crore Covid expenditure may have been siphoned off. The report, discussed in a recent cabinet meeting, highlighted missing files and serious mismanagement in the disbursement of funds.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pointed out during the meeting that the report contained grave observations about the misappropriation of hundreds of crores. Despite repeated requests, key documents were reportedly not made available to the investigating judge. This lack of transparency has fueled concerns over the handling of Covid funds.
The interim report, which spans over 1,000 pages, is expected to be finalized within the next six months. It could potentially be presented during the winter session of Parliament. The state government has extended the committee’s investigation period by six months to ensure a thorough review and completion of the final report.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil has downplayed the comparisons between the new allegations and the MUDA scam, which has also been a point of contention. He described the situation as unfortunate, suggesting that recent reports are being used for political one-upmanship rather than addressing the issues at hand.
The fresh allegations come as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah faces legal challenges related to the MUDA scam, where accusations involve irregular land allocations to his family. This ongoing scrutiny has intensified the political battle between the Congress and BJP, with both sides leveraging these issues for political gain.
