Google is facing scrutiny in India following a tragic accident in which three men lost their lives after their car plunged into the Ramganga river in Uttar Pradesh. The group was en route to a wedding when they drove off an unfinished bridge early Sunday morning. Authorities are investigating whether Google Maps directed them to the hazardous route.
According to police officials, the driver of the vehicle followed the navigation instructions provided by Google Maps, which led them to the incomplete bridge. A portion of the bridge had been damaged during flooding last year, leaving the structure in a dangerous state.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the reliability of navigation apps, with critics questioning the accuracy of directions provided by mapping services. The police have already questioned an unnamed Google official as part of their investigation. In addition, authorities have also interrogated officials from the government’s public works department, which is responsible for maintaining the bridge.
A Google spokesperson expressed their condolences for the tragic loss, offering their support to authorities in the ongoing investigation. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families. We’re working closely with the authorities and providing our support to investigate the issue,” the spokesperson stated in an email to AFP.
This incident comes just over a year after a similar tragedy in Kerala, where two doctors were killed when their car, following Google Maps directions, drove off a bridge into the Periyar river.
Authorities are now looking into how navigation apps might contribute to accidents by directing drivers onto unsafe or incomplete routes, and whether more stringent safeguards should be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
The investigation into Sunday’s accident is ongoing, with the police working to determine whether there was a failure on the part of the navigation app or the infrastructure’s maintenance, or a combination of both.
As of now, Google has pledged full cooperation with Indian authorities as they probe the cause of the accident, while also promising to further assess the app’s navigation features in light of the tragic event.
