In a surprising move, Google recently announced a substantial round of layoffs affecting hundreds of employees in its voice assistant and hardware teams, specifically those associated with Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit. Among those affected was Kevin Bourrillion, a Google veteran with an impressive 19-year tenure at the tech giant. Bourrillion, who spent over 16 years on the team he founded, took to social media to share his thoughts on the unexpected turn of events.
“End of an era! After 19 years of working at @Google, with more than 16 of them on the team that I founded, I made the tough decision yesterday morning to finally bite the bullet and find out that I’d been laid off overnight,” Bourrillion shared on a popular social media platform.
Despite the abrupt nature of the layoff, Bourrillion expressed a level-headed perspective, acknowledging the challenges while embracing the opportunity for change in his life. “Layoffs suck, but in my case… it’s fine, because I’ve needed some kind of change in my life for a very long time. And I have no plans to rush into anything else right now,” he continued. The seasoned Google employee outlined various personal pursuits he plans to embark on, including cycling, reading, restarting drum lessons, travel, and quality family time.
“I view my 19 years there and the people I got to work with and things I got to do as an immense blessing. No expressions of sympathy are called for in my case! And with that, I’m off to go figure out how to actually live my life!” Bourrillion added.
Google confirmed the layoffs on Wednesday, revealing that the restructuring primarily impacted the voice assistant and hardware teams. A company spokesperson explained that the changes were part of an ongoing effort to enhance efficiency and realign resources with key product priorities.
“Throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities,” the Google spokesperson stated to Reuters.
The layoffs extended beyond the voice assistant and hardware teams, with the augmented reality team and roles in the search giant’s central engineering team also affected. The move signals a strategic shift within Google as it continues to adapt to evolving market dynamics and prioritize key focus areas.
As Google employees grapple with the aftermath of the layoffs, the tech industry will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how the company navigates these changes and how the affected individuals, like Bourrillion, transition into new phases of their professional and personal lives.
