Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, has ventured into a new role as an arms dealer, focusing on providing advanced drone technology to Ukraine. Schmidt’s new company, White Stork, aims to revolutionize warfare with AI-driven attack drones, a shift from his previous career in technology.

In a recent Stanford University lecture, Schmidt expressed his frustration over the destruction caused by the Russian military, describing the use of tanks to demolish apartment buildings and harm civilians as deeply disturbing. This drove him to take action, resulting in his new role in the defense sector. “Watching the Russians use tanks to destroy apartment buildings with little old ladies and kids just drove me crazy,” Schmidt remarked.

White Stork, Schmidt’s startup, is dedicated to developing sophisticated drones equipped with artificial intelligence to identify and target adversaries efficiently. The goal is to reduce the reliance on traditional ground battles and heavy artillery. Schmidt, who has previously chaired the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, emphasized that the drones would be deployed directly to Ukraine with government support to aid in the conflict.

Despite his new role, Schmidt cautioned against following in his footsteps. “I do not recommend this in your career path; I’d stick with AI,” he advised, humorously noting his unusual transition from computer scientist to arms dealer.

Schmidt’s involvement in this high-tech defense venture marks a significant departure from his previous role as the CEO of Google, where he led the company from 2001 to 2011. His new endeavor reflects a growing intersection of technology and military applications in modern conflicts.
