Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has made an unconventional and intriguing job offer as he seeks to hire a Chief of Staff for his team. The catch? The candidate will not receive a salary for the first year, and instead, will be required to donate ₹20 lakh to Zomato. The amount, however, will be entirely directed to the non-profit organization Feeding India, which is dedicated to tackling hunger and food insecurity across the country.

Goyal shared the job posting on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the ideal candidate should be “down to earth,” have “zero entitlement,” and possess qualities like empathy, a strong learning mindset, and Grade A communication skills. The job, Goyal explained, is about building the future of Zomato and its other brands, such as Blinkit, District, Hyperpure, and Feeding India.

The role, while unconventional, is positioned as a unique learning opportunity. According to Goyal, the selected candidate will gain “10x more learnings” than they would from a two-year degree from a top management school. He added that the first year would offer invaluable exposure to the workings of the company, as the candidate will be working closely with him.

Why would someone choose to pay to work at Zomato? Goyal answered this question in the job description, emphasizing that the role should be seen as an opportunity for learning rather than for monetary compensation. The ₹20 lakh donation, which will not be paid back to the candidate, will fund Feeding India, while Zomato will contribute ₹50 lakh to a charity of the candidate’s choice. Starting the second year, the candidate will be offered a salary of more than ₹50 lakh.

The Chief of Staff role is designed for individuals who have a passion for learning and are not focused on building their resume, as per Goyal’s statement. The job is expected to provide extensive hands-on experience and exposure to high-level operations in the tech and food service industries.

Interested applicants are invited to send a 200-word cover letter to Goyal via email, and those selected will undergo a rigorous but rewarding journey with Zomato. The company hopes to find someone who is eager to make a difference, both at Zomato and in the broader community through charitable contributions.
