Bharti Airtel, one of India’s leading telecom operators, has strongly denied reports suggesting a massive data breach affecting 375 million of its customers. Recent allegations claimed that sensitive customer information, including phone numbers, emails, addresses, and Aadhaar details, were up for sale on the dark web.

In response to these claims, Airtel issued a statement categorically rejecting any breach of its security systems. An Airtel spokesperson stated to Moneycontrol, “There has been a report alleging that Airtel customer data has been compromised. This is nothing short of a desperate attempt to tarnish Airtel’s reputation by vested interests.” The spokesperson further asserted, “We have done a thorough investigation and can confirm that there has been no breach whatsoever from Airtel systems.”

The unverified reports had suggested that a significant amount of personal data, including sensitive identifiers like Aadhaar numbers, were available for purchase on illicit online platforms. Cybersecurity experts weighed in on the situation, with Rahul Sasi, CEO of CloudSEK, addressing the issue on LinkedIn. He pointed out that the data purportedly linked to Airtel may have been aggregated from previously leaked information rather than being a recent breach of Airtel’s databases.

“Over the past few years, there have been numerous instances of millions of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) being leaked from various providers,” Sasi explained. “Threat actors are aggregating this publicly available leaked information and falsely attributing it to telecom databases.”

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about data security and the challenges faced by telecom companies in safeguarding customer information amidst evolving cyber threats. Airtel’s firm denial aims to reassure its customers and stakeholders amid the controversy.
