In a bid to prioritize guest privacy, Airbnb announced on Monday that it will be prohibiting the use of indoor security cameras within guest homes. The decision comes after previous allowances permitted the installation of indoor cameras in common areas, such as hallways and living rooms, provided they were clearly disclosed in property listings.

The San Francisco-based home rental platform acknowledged mounting concerns raised by guests who reported discovering hidden cameras within Airbnb lodgings, compromising their expectation of privacy. As a result, Airbnb is taking proactive steps to address these issues by enforcing stricter guidelines surrounding the use of security cameras.

Under the new policy set to take effect on April 30, indoor security cameras will be banned entirely from Airbnb listings worldwide. This move is part of a broader effort by the company to simplify its policies on security devices and reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding the privacy of its community members.

Juniper Downs, Head of Community Policy and Partnerships at Airbnb, emphasized the importance of providing clarity to the Airbnb community regarding expectations and standards. While indoor security cameras will no longer be permitted, certain exceptions will apply to doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors, which serve purposes related to home security and event detection.

Hosts will remain obligated to disclose the presence and locations of any outdoor security cameras on their properties. However, these cameras will be subject to restrictions, with Airbnb explicitly prohibiting monitoring in sensitive areas such as outdoor showers or saunas.

As Airbnb continues to evolve its policies in response to changing dynamics and guest feedback, the implementation of this ban underscores the platform’s commitment to maintaining trust and ensuring a safe and secure experience for all users.
