An Air India flight en route from Mumbai to New York was diverted to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday following a bomb threat, raising significant security concerns for passengers and crew on board. The aircraft took off at approximately 2 am but was redirected to Delhi shortly after the airline received a specific security alert.
Upon landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport, the flight was grounded while all standard safety protocols were put into effect to ensure the safety of everyone on board. A senior police officer confirmed that the necessary measures were being diligently followed.
The situation unfolded after a message was received at the Mumbai airport via X (formerly Twitter), indicating a bomb threat related to the flight destined for New York. This prompted immediate communication with security agencies in Delhi, leading to the decision to divert the aircraft for precautionary measures.
An Air India spokesperson issued a statement confirming the incident: “Flight AI119 operating from Mumbai to JFK on October 14 received a specific security alert and, on instructions from the government’s security regulatory committee, was diverted to Delhi. All passengers have disembarked and are currently at the Delhi airport terminal. Our ground team is working to minimize the inconvenience caused by this unexpected disruption. Air India is committed to and prioritizes the safety and security of its passengers and crew.”
This incident comes just days after another Air India Express flight, bound for Sharjah from Tiruchirappalli, encountered a mid-air technical glitch shortly after takeoff. The aircraft had to circle multiple times to reduce fuel and weight before making a safe landing. Following the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin praised the pilots and crew for their quick thinking and professionalism, which averted a potential disaster.
An Air India Express spokesperson noted that the cause of the previous technical issue would be thoroughly investigated, and an alternative aircraft was being arranged for the affected passengers’ onward journey.
The recent events have raised awareness and concern regarding air travel safety and the importance of immediate response protocols in the face of potential threats.
