🇮🇳 Nationwide Bharat Bandh Affects Public Services Across India

India witnessed widespread disruption today as over 25 crore workers participated in a Bharat Bandh organized by central trade unions and supported by farmer groups. The protest is aimed at opposing labor law reforms, privatization of public sector units (PSUs), and inflation. Major sectors affected include banking, transport, and postal services, particularly in West Bengal, Delhi, Kerala, and Gujarat. Despite the strike, schools and colleges remained open, and essential services were mostly unaffected.
Banking Operations Paralyzed in Gujarat
In Gujarat, nearly 20,000 bank employees joined the strike, disrupting services in over 3,500 branches. An estimated ₹15,000 crore worth of banking transactions were stalled due to the one-day protest. Customers faced issues with cash handling, cheque clearance, and account services. ATM operations remained largely unaffected.
Press Freedom Controversy: Reuters Accounts Briefly Blocked in India
Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that the Indian government ordered the blocking of Reuters News accounts on July 3, citing national security under Section 69A of the IT Act. The accounts, including @ReutersIndia and @ReutersWorld, were restored on July 5 after backlash. The Indian government denied issuing any fresh blocking orders, leading to confusion and criticism regarding transparency in digital censorship.
India–US Trade Talks Enter Final Phase
India is nearing a “mini” trade agreement with the United States, following tariff suspensions extended till August 1. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India will only enter agreements aligned with national interest and will not succumb to external deadlines. The deal is expected to provide relief in sectors like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and electronics.
Indian Railways Implements Minor Fare Revision
Effective July 1, Indian Railways has introduced a modest fare hike across AC and sleeper classes, citing increased fuel and operational costs.
