A Reddit post about a man using ChatGPT to resolve a chronic health issue has gone viral, reigniting discussions about the evolving role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. The man claimed that after suffering from a persistent jaw clicking problem for five years, the AI chatbot provided a simple solution that resolved his condition in under a minute—something multiple doctors and specialists had failed to achieve.
“After 5 years of jaw clicking (TMJ), ChatGPT cured it in 60 seconds,” the Reddit user wrote, referring to his temporomandibular joint disorder, a condition often associated with jaw pain and clicking sounds. He said the issue stemmed from a boxing injury and that previous consultations with an ENT specialist, dentists, and two MRIs yielded no solution. Just as he was about to see a maxillofacial specialist, he decided to consult ChatGPT on a whim.
The AI reportedly suggested that the disc in his jaw was likely slightly displaced but movable. It also recommended a specific technique: opening his mouth slowly while keeping his tongue on the roof of his mouth and watching for symmetry. To his surprise, the method worked instantly.
“I even saw an ENT about it, had two MRIs (one with contrast dye), and just recently went to the dentist who referred me to maxillofacial. Funny enough, I found this fix right before the referral came through,” he added.
His story quickly gained traction on social media, where many users shared similar experiences of turning to AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude for health-related queries. One commenter wrote, “You just fixed me. No joke. Thanks a bunch.” Another said, “I found out more about my sleeping issues in 15 minutes with GPT than years of other research and a decade of doctor visits.”
Some users even suggested that AI was more helpful than traditional medicine. “Same. I spent years feeling unwell. MRI. Specialists, etc. gave Claude my symptoms and it told me to get three specific tests done. Two of three came back conclusive. Now, I’ve finally got the medicine I need to be normal again,” another Redditor claimed.
While these anecdotal cases show promising potential for AI in aiding health-related self-diagnosis and education, experts warn against using it as a substitute for professional medical advice. The debate over AI’s place in modern medicine is far from over, but this incident has certainly added fuel to the conversation.
