In a remarkable turn of events, a routine shopping trip led to an unexpected job offer when Ankit Aggarwal, the founder and CEO of Unstop, visited Reliance Digital to buy a printer. Instead of just making a purchase, he discovered a hidden talent and walked out having hired a new front-end developer for his company.

From Salesman to Software Developer

Aggarwal shared the inspiring hiring story on LinkedIn, where it quickly went viral. He recounted how a salesman named Sandeep assisted him with his purchase and casually mentioned that he was upskilling to become a front-end developer.

Seeing his enthusiasm, Aggarwal decided to put his skills to the test. “I saw potential & asked, ‘Build a small app for us as an assignment.’ No formal applications, just a real chance to showcase his skills,” he wrote.

Sandeep took the challenge seriously, completed the task, and impressed Aggarwal with his dedication. As a result, he was offered a position at Unstop. “It wasn’t planned, and it wasn’t a recruitment drive. It was just a casual conversation that turned into an opportunity,” Aggarwal reflected.

Social Media Praises the Unconventional Hiring Approach

Aggarwal’s post resonated with many LinkedIn users, who flooded the comments section with praise.

One user remarked, “This is what leadership is about—recognizing talent where others may overlook it.” Another commented, “A true testament to how skills matter more than degrees. Kudos to both of you!”

Many called it an example of why real-world skills should take precedence over traditional hiring processes. “This should be a wake-up call for recruiters. Real skills over resumes any day!” wrote one user.
