Delhi Student Working Part-Time for Swiggy Criticizes Company Insurance as ‘Useless’

A 20-year-old student juggling multiple academic pursuits while working part-time as a Swiggy delivery agent has criticized the corporate insurance offered by the company, calling it “useless.” His comments, shared during a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) session, have reignited discussions about the lack of basic benefits for gig workers in India.

The student, who is studying Computer Science, German, and BA (Hons) Psychology, claimed that insurance providers create hurdles when gig workers try to avail company-sponsored policies. “As soon as the insurance company gets to know it’s corporate insurance, they start doing drama and don’t let us claim,” he said.

Concerns Over Quick Commerce and Wages

When asked whether people should avoid ordering from 10-minute delivery platforms like Zepto and Swiggy due to their alleged exploitative practices, the student admitted that the situation is complex. He explained that if one worker refuses a low-paying order, another will likely accept it.

“I think quick commerce is just a bubble. Once all of these companies start facing real losses, they will come back to their senses,” he added, highlighting sustainability concerns in the industry.

Issues With Cash Payments

The student also pointed out challenges related to cash-on-delivery orders. Both Swiggy and Zomato reportedly impose a cash collection limit on riders, beyond which their accounts get disabled until they transfer the amount back to the company.

A fellow Zomato rider claimed that they are allowed to collect up to ₹2,000 in cash. If they exceed this limit, their ID is temporarily disabled until they deposit the excess amount.

The student echoed these concerns, saying cash payments are a hassle, especially when it comes to returning change to customers. He urged customers to use UPI for a smoother payment experience.
