A key part of this expansion involves adding about 200 employees in Beijing to bolster its research team focused on self-driving technology. These new hires are expected to contribute to the development of Nvidia’s autonomous driving software and AI capabilities, aligning with the company’s growing focus on the electric vehicle (EV) market.
In addition to increasing its self-driving research team, Nvidia has also expanded its after-sales service and networking software development teams in China. The company’s growth in China is in response to the booming demand for AI chips, which power various sectors, including self-driving cars, data centers, and AI systems.
Despite facing US trade restrictions that prevent Nvidia from selling its most advanced semiconductors in China, the country remains a crucial market for the company. Nvidia earned $5.4 billion in sales in China during the September quarter, underscoring the significance of the Chinese market to its global operations.
China’s support for domestic electric vehicle manufacturers has allowed the country to become a leader in EV technologies, further driving the demand for connected and automated vehicles. Nvidia has been developing autonomous driving and AI technologies for over a decade, and the new Beijing-based research team will play a key role in collaborating with local automakers looking to integrate advanced AI and automation in their vehicles.
While Nvidia has sought to maintain strong relations with China, the company is also facing scrutiny from Beijing’s antitrust regulator. Recently, Chinese authorities announced a probe into Nvidia’s 2020 acquisition of Mellanox, a deal that was conditionally approved at the time. The investigation, which could result in a fine or other measures, comes amid increasing tensions in the US-China trade dispute.
As of early 2024, Nvidia has approximately 29,600 employees across 36 countries. In China, the company has grown rapidly in recent years, with nearly 600 employees based in Beijing, where it also recently opened a new office in the Zhongguancun tech hub.
This expansion in China marks a key development for Nvidia as it continues to invest heavily in AI and autonomous driving, sectors that are expected to drive the future of the automotive and technology industries.
