In a pre-election crackdown, the Mira-Bhayander-Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police seized unaccounted cash worth ₹5 crore from three separate vehicles on Thursday, as part of a heightened security operation in the lead-up to the November 20 assembly elections. The nakabandi (checkpoint) operations were conducted in response to potential election code of conduct violations, with officers focusing on large, undocumented cash transfers.
The largest of the three seizures occurred when Nalasopara police intercepted a van transporting ₹3.5 crore in cash marked for ATMs. The vehicle, branded with the CMS (Cash Management Services) logo, was stopped on suspicion at the Nalasopara checkpoint. Inside, officers discovered metal suitcases filled with cash but found no documentation justifying its transfer. “There were no legal documents substantiating the transfer of the cash,” explained an officer from Nalasopara police station. According to the occupants of the van, which bore the license plate MH 43 BX 5443, it had departed from Goregaon and was en route to Virar.
Authorities are investigating whether the funds might have been earmarked for election-related activities, which would be deemed illegal under the model code of conduct. “We are now investigating if the cash was meant for election activities, as this would breach the code of conduct,” the officer added.
In a separate incident, Naya Nagar police intercepted a small tempo on Mira Road around 5 pm on Thursday, uncovering ₹1 crore in cash from the vehicle. The tempo, which was linked to a private company, also lacked documentation. The driver was detained, and authorities are now working to trace both the origin and intended delivery point of the funds.
The MBVV police have intensified efforts to prevent violations of election conduct rules ahead of the polls, focusing on suspicious cash movements and maintaining a strict watch on vehicles. Investigations into the source and purpose of the seized cash remain underway.
