The findings were released by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal at a recent event, highlighting the substantial impact of online retail on job creation.

In a significant boost to India’s employment landscape, the e-commerce sector has created approximately 1.6 crore (16 million) jobs, with around 35 lakh (3.5 million) positions filled by women, according to a new report. The findings were released by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal at a recent event, highlighting the substantial impact of online retail on job creation.

The report, titled “Assessing the Net Impact of e-Commerce on Employment and Consumer Welfare in India,” was published by the Pahle India Foundation (PIF), a New Delhi-based policy research institute. It underscores the role of e-commerce in driving employment and its expanding reach across various demographics and geographic areas.

Key insights from the report reveal that e-commerce has become a major employment driver, with 1.76 million retail enterprises now participating in online activity. On average, each e-commerce vendor employs about nine people, including two women, compared to offline vendors who typically employ about six people, with only one woman in the workforce.

The report notes that online vendors hire 54% more people and nearly double the number of female employees compared to their offline counterparts. This is reflective of e-commerce’s growing presence in tier 3 cities and its potential to create job opportunities across different skill levels.

The e-commerce sector has also shown improvements in business performance. More than two-thirds of online vendors reported an increase in online sales value and profits over the past year, with 58% noting growth in both metrics. This trend underscores the advantages of online platforms and provides a strong case for offline vendors to adopt an omni-channel strategy.

Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that the growth of e-commerce should be inclusive and benefit a broader segment of society. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the distribution of e-commerce benefits is democratized and accessible to all.

As e-commerce continues to evolve, its impact on employment and business performance highlights its critical role in India’s economic development and the opportunities it presents for both job seekers and businesses alike.
