In a significant move towards enhancing India’s metal production, the Adani Group, led by billionaire Gautam Adani, is on track to establish the world’s largest single-location copper manufacturing plant in Mundra, Gujarat. This ambitious project, with a whopping investment of $1.2 billion, aims to reduce India’s reliance on copper imports and contribute to the country’s energy transition efforts.
The state-of-the-art facility is scheduled to commence its first phase of operations by the end of March, with plans to achieve its full-scale capacity of 1 million tonnes by 2029. This strategic initiative aligns India with other leading nations, including China, that are rapidly expanding their copper production capabilities, recognizing the metal’s crucial role in transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Copper is a vital component in technologies driving the global energy transition, such as electric vehicles (EVs), charging infrastructure, solar photovoltaics (PV), wind, and batteries. The Adani Group’s copper plant aims to meet the surging demand for this industrial metal, which ranks third after steel and aluminum in terms of usage.
The move comes at a pivotal moment as Vedanta Ltd seeks to reopen a long-shuttered 400,000-tonne plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. Currently, India’s largest copper smelter is operated by Hindalco Industries Ltd, boasting a capacity of 0.5 million tonnes.
India’s growing demand for copper has outpaced domestic production, leading to increased dependence on imported copper. Over the past five years, the country has witnessed a consistent rise in copper imports. The Adani Group’s endeavor is poised to address this gap and fortify India’s self-sufficiency in copper production.
Globally, copper production is relatively concentrated, with Chile and Peru, the top two producers, contributing to 38% of the world’s total output. Adani’s ambitious venture signals India’s commitment to diversifying its metal production landscape and securing a more sustainable future in the rapidly evolving energy landscape.
As the Mundra facility gears up for its initial phase of operations, the Adani Group’s copper plant stands as a testament to India’s strides towards bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities and fostering self-reliance in critical sectors.
